St. Illuminator Armenian
Day School

Founded in 1977, St. Illuminator has a long tradition of academic excellence.

The school is recognized by New York State, and we follow the state curriculum for every grade, N-6.

Our pupils consistently score above average on state and city tests, and most are placed in honors classes when they graduate and go into 7th grade.

In addition to teaching the common branch subjects we offer music, art and computer. Our pupils also learn about their rich Armenian heritage through the study of Armenian language, religion, history, art,  dance, music and culture. Our class sizes are small, enabling teachers to give more individualized attention to their students.

Mission Statement

St. Illuminator Armenian Day School is devoted to preserving and encouraging an appreciation for the Armenian language, history, religion and culture while maintaining high academic standards in Armenian and English subjects. The School strives to provide educational opportunities that will develop positive universal values, academic, social and emotional skills that will guide, prepare and encourage our students to be better citizens. We foster a safe, nurturing environment of mutual respect. We aim at helping the student to discover and develop a sense of self-esteem, through self-discovery of basic gifts and personal talents.

Philosophy, Curriculum and Implementation

The student is learning at the core of our education. Understanding students' abilities and guiding them so that he/she can develop to the best of his/her capabilities. The curriculum is child-centered, and we approach each student as a valued individual. We encourage free thinking and uninhibited dialogue. It endeavors in all areas of learning to develop the individual student's potential to the utmost. The programs adopted by the School are based on the concept of growing in a tolerant and understanding environment with respect to fellow students.

The School calendar and schedules for classes and activities are made in accordance with the Standards for New York State Elementary Schools.

Our approach is holistic, focusing on academic excellence, social growth, and ethical development of our pupils.

Our small classes enable us to meet the needs of all of our students, we emphasize:

  1. A blend of current and traditional curricula and practice
  2. An Armenian environment which allows each child to grow in knowledge and commitment to his/her religious and historic heritage
  3. An opportunity for each child to develop values which will give him/her the strength to live in the challenging world of today
  4. An atmosphere of support and understanding
  5. A nurturing of positive feelings about self and others
  6. A recognition of the diverse needs and learning styles of each student
  7. An acceptance of racial, cultural, and social differences among students
  8. Involvement with parish and community, bringing in outside resources and providing student service opportunities
  9. It is our intent to maintain the intimate, family centered, small school setting. By the very nature of our size, we are able to know each individual child and family by name. We are enhanced by the collaborative relationship with our parents and St. Illuminator's Cathedral.
